Praying With The Wesleys: Foundations of Methodist Spirituality

Featuring Rev. John R. Tyson, Ph.D.

30 March 2019

This day-long enrichment event will focus upon the spiritual lives of Susanna, John, and Charles Wesley as practitioners and shapers of a distinctive approach(s) to prayer. It is averred that prayer was/is the foundational discipline of the five “Methodist Means of Grace” (or spiritual disciplines). After a brief examination of the biographical context and distinctive emphases of the Wesleys’ prayer-lives, lines of connection will be drawn from those themes to the larger project of developing a vital Wesleyan spirituality for ourselves and our communities of faith.

Tentative Schedule

9:30–10:00   Arrival, check-in, snacks
10:00–11:30   Session One: “The Roots of a Spiritual Life”
Noon   Dinner
1:00-2:30   Session Two: “Revitalizing the Methodist Methods”
2:30-3:30   Worship Event: Wesleyan Covenant Service with Holy Communion
3:30 or so   Departure

About John Tyson

A life-long United Methodist, John R. Tyson was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He first became interested in the hymns of Charles Wesley, as a child, when he sang them in the yellow-brick Center Avenue United Methodist Church, in Pitcairn, Pa. After pastorates in Florida and Pennsylvania, he pursued doctoral studies at Drew University, earning the M.Phil. and Ph.D. writing his Ph.D. dissertation on “Charles Wesley’s Theology of the Cross.”

An Elder of the Upper New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dr. Tyson taught Religious Studies at Houghton College, Houghton, NY, and served churches in the Niagara Frontier District.  For the past decade, he has served as Professor of Church History and Director of UMC Studies at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, NY.

Author of more than 80 articles, and fourteen books, his Charles Wesley on Sanctification (Zondervan, 1986), Charles Wesley: A Reader (Oxford University Press, 1989), Assist Me To Proclaim: The Life and Hymns of Charles Wesley (Eerdmans, 2007), and The Way of the Wesleys (2014), have made significant contributions to UMC Studies.  His most recent book,: Praying with the Wesleys: Foundations of Methodist Spirituality will be released by Abingdon/UMPH later this spring.

In his spare time, John enjoys biking, reading, writing, and sports. He is an avid Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers fan.

Please wear appropriate footwear! The 5K race will be professionally timed.

Please note that in the event that conditions do not allow for our trail system to be used for the race, we will use an alternate lap course using the West Shore Field and Campground Road.

Each summer hundreds of campers, volunteers, and paid staff enjoy classic camp programs designed for children, youth, families, and individuals with special needs. In addition to the funding available from local churches and organizations, almost 25% of our campers rely solely on the Campership Fund to make a week at Sky Lake possible.
